Reading Campground 2019

P.S. 56 Brooklyn invites you to explore our Reading Campground, a day-long camp-themed community celebration of reading, theater and storytelling under the stars. For toddlers to 5th graders.

Admission is FREE; refreshments, raffle tickets and children’s books are for sale.

When: Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: P.S. 56 Brooklyn Gymnasium – 170 Gates Avenue at Irving Place in Clinton Hill

Our school gymnasium will be transformed into a woodland campground with reading tents, toddler teepees and stars overhead.

In the lobby, the latest and best new children’s books will be on sale at a discount, including board books, art and activity books, graphic novels, science books, novelties and newly illustrated classics!


  • Open the treasure trunk for a theatrical adventure with Treasure Trunk Theatre! Sessions at 10:15 and 10:45 at the toddler teepees.
  • Storytime with Raquel M. Ortiz, author of Sofi and the Magic, Musical Mural and Planting Flags on Division Street.
  • Indoor S’mores!
  • Hot chocolate bar

Presented by the PTA of P.S. 56 Brooklyn – The Lewis H Latimer School. P.S. 56 is a small public elementary school in the heart of Clinton Hill with a warm, child-centered approach. Students have dance, science, physical education, music with Little Orchestra and Suzi Shelton, art with Studio in a School, chess after school and more. The school has a World Language Spanish and a Gifted & Talented program. Proceeds from this event will help fund our enrichment programs.

More about Treasure Trunk Theatre: Act, Move, Create, and Play… Where will your imagination take you today? We will play imaginative theatre games with the children and then open our trunk for a mini adventure. Children will learn how to work together as an ensemble and explore the art of improvisation and storytelling. Treasure Trunk Theatre – Offering theatrical camps, classes, birthday parties and more for kiddos ages 6 months to 8 years!
