PS 56 PTA Newsletter | October 2018

Welcome, all families! The PS 56 PTA is here to enhance the learning environment for students and support parent involvement.

About the PS 56 PTA

ALL parents and guardians, teachers and staff members are members of the PTA — there is no other requirement for membership.

General PTA meetings are usually held on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Check the school calendar at and sign up for the Remind PTA text service for updates.

Our next meeting will be on October 15, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the PS 56 cafeteria.

Your PTA officers are:

PTA Committees – contact the Committee Leader to join!

We’re Looking for a Few Good People!

At our October 15th general PTA meeting, we will be electing a new PTA Treasurer and two parent representatives to join the School Leadership Team (SLT).

These positions are open to any parent or guardian. If you’re worried about the skills required to be Treasurer, there are plenty of trainings and materials to help out! Nominations for these positions will be taken from the floor, so come ready to raise your hand!

Keep in Touch with the PTA

We’ve heard you loud and clear: you want better communication. The school website is undergoing a complete redesign, and in the meantime, here are some ways to stay in the know.

Sign up for Remind text messages. The PTA uses Remind for real time texts and reminders. To start, text @56pta to the number 81010. You will be prompted to download the app but it is not necessary.

Follow us on Facebook,

Become a class parent! Class parents set up a Google group or other way for parents to communicate with each other about anything from homework questions to weekend meetups. The class parent can also relay information, requests and reminders from the teacher. The class parent system has worked well for a few classes and we’d like to expand it to as many classes as possible. Contact to volunteer.

How to Support Your PTA

The PTA supports STEAM programming such as a sustained Studio in a School program, school supplies and trip funds, community building activities such as Dino Dig, Reading Campground, the Holiday Store, and a Unity in the Community health fair. We do teacher appreciation, student of the month and graduation. All of our programming is member-supported, so here’s how you can help:

PTA Dues. We suggest $10 per household, or $5 for teachers per meeting. Dues are voluntary and may be paid by cash or check at general meetings or left in the PTA mailbox in the main office with your name.

Amazon Smile. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to PS 56! To sign up go to and select “PS 56” as your charity, or use this link:

A Big Thanks to Key Food on Fulton!

Our first School Supply Drive was a big success with help from Rocky Widdi at Key Food, which collected donations and also made donations of their own. If you see Rocky while you’re doing your grocery shopping, say thanks!
