Message from the Principal 2018 – 2019 School Year

September 5th, 2018

Greetings Parents and Families,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all returning and incoming families to the 2018-2019 school year at PS 56! We are eager and determined to provide your children with the most engaging and enriching school experience possible. Through a strong collaboration between the school staff, PTA, School Leadership Team and families, I am confident we will achieve our goals and more.

For the past few years, it has been a focus to increase student enrollment, expand our classes and enhance program offerings at PS 56.  We have been successful in this effort and have, as a result, more students and classes throughout the school this year. We have continued our World Language Spanish Program into the 1st grade, and we now have three Gifted and Talented classes.  Furthermore, we have two 4th and two 5th grade general education classes, resulting in multiple classes per grade throughout PS 56.  This effort also has led to lower class sizes throughout the school so more individualized attention can be paid to the children.  With this expansion, we have seven new teachers beginning at PS 56 from various educational settings and backgrounds that are eager to meet and start working with your children.  I want to thank all parents and families who have helped spread the word about PS 56 and all that is happening here to provide our children with the best experiences possible.

We always seek to provide a well-rounded experience for the students, with our dance, physical education, library and science programs, with a goal to educate the whole child.  Our partnerships with various arts organizations will continue as well, with residencies from Studio in a School, Little Orchestra Society, Suzi Shelton Music, Dancing Classrooms, among others.  We look forward to getting them started in the coming weeks.

I am also very excited to share that we expect some significant building enhancements this year and into next year. I expect within the first couple of months of the fall, to have our new dance studio. The room conversion will result in special wood flooring, mirrors, and an enhanced sound system.  We also will be expanding a section of the library into a neighboring office to create a media center, with additional desktop computers and Smartboards to implement various coding programs and enhance STEM experiences. Further down the road, we expect to have the hydroponic greenhouse in our courtyard and the playground upgrade. Both projects will possibly begin by the end of the school year.

I look forward to seeing the children and families this week and have a great start to the school year!  As always, we welcome your feedback and look forward to our work together.
