PTA MEETING tonight — GUEST SPEAKER CANCELED

Tonight’s speaker has been canceled — we hope to reschedule early next year.

Tonight we plan to vote on several spending measures:

Teachers Fund — increase from $5,000 to $5,400 to include four more full-time educator/support staff. Currently the fund covers all classroom and cluster teachers, but if we increase the budget we can include our guidance counselor, reading specialist, occupational therapist and speech therapist.

Spanish Choir – Trial session – 2 classes x 12 weeks Free afterschool from 3pm-4pm and includes a final performance. One upper grades class – 30 kids from (Grades 3-5) and 1 lower grades class -30 kids (K – 2nd). Starting January 2020 – March 2020. Asking PTA to pay for music instructor ($80 per class) and teacher assist ($50 per class). Offered free on a first come, first serve basis. If all goes well and there is interest, we will then ask for a second session from April 2020 – June 2020, giving priority to those who did not have a chance during session 1. Total cost: $3,120 for 60 children per session.

Dance Africa — For a residency from BAM’s AfricanDanceBeat program, 3rd and 4th graders will experience a live drummer and African dance teacher for 13 sessions. The residency will end in a culminating performance and seeing DanceAfrica at BAM. Total cost: $3,000. Already raised: $1,000. Read more about it here.

Cricut — We have a request from our teachers to purchase a Cricut die cutter, which cuts a myriad of different shapes from paper and cloth and can be used for a variety of classroom projects. This equipment would be available for use by all teachers. $400.

Projector Bulb — Our projector system in the auditorium was provided through a grant about a decade ago and the bulb has finally burned out. The bulb is not available through normal DOE vendors. Price seems to range from $200 to $700 so trying to narrow it down.

Chess Tournament — $902.60 (We had 60 kids at first one)

Community Building Fund: $2,500 to building community engagement. The E-Board will have oversight of the funds to ensure all family feel welcomed at PS 56. The uses of the funds will included but are not limited to tickets to school event, outreach to parents and extended families and school supplies.. etc
